On British soil. So, thank you very much. It is an honour for me to be here. And I can see from the number of people here today just how important this is to this community.

I would also like to pay tribute to Mr Aziz, who, along with many of you, has helped me learn and understand these issues regarding Kashmir. I am speaking, as you can tell, not as a Kashmiri, not as a Pakistani, but as a British Member of Parliament who believes that democracy, human rights, and freedom must be valued and must exist, no matter what piece of land you live on, whichever community you grew up in, whichever part of the earth is your homeland, we should all have those values and rights.

Peterborough Council Resolution

And as a British politician, it is my duty to speak on behalf of those facing distress or anxiety because they cannot speak out. And you have heard some of this, and I... my team, as many of you know, recently, with the help of Brother Councillor Ali here and others from Peterborough, have spoken out. And I would like to pay tribute to Councillor Ali, along with our Peterborough councillors, who brought forward a resolution on behalf of the city of Peterborough, not just on behalf of one community, but on behalf of all our communities, to say that as a city, we recognize its importance to our community here, and we recognize the importance of the values of human rights.

Because I know from British citizens living in Peterborough, from my constituents who have contacted me—some have families back there, some are still back there— that the fear of harassment, retaliation, and attack is real on a daily basis. So on your behalf, as the representative of this constituency, it is my duty to speak out, because I will not be intimidated by those who work against human rights.

I will not be intimidated by those who try to silence the voices of those who have a legitimate role in raising issues about their democracy, their homeland, their birthplace, and who are able to speak about it fairly and accurately. And I actually think that for those of us who are not of Kashmiri or Pakistani origin, being a champion for this cause is very powerful, just as I am on other issues like Palestine and other parts of the world where I will speak out on human rights.

Death of Community Member

I have... I was saddened, but not surprised, to read about this death, as many of you were, of someone who was living among us as part of our community in Peterborough. And I cannot say much about this, but we are in contact with several local families, just as other MPs of all parties in different parts of the country are involved in helping to provide them with support. On the day this news appeared in The Guardian, I spoke directly with the new minister, Minister Doughty, who is the new minister for Pakistan, Kashmir, and the region, to make it clear in the strongest terms that this conduct by Pakistani forces is unacceptable and this treatment of a British citizen is unacceptable.

A British citizenship should carry weight globally, showing that a government and a community in this country represent you, which will protect you and speak for you wherever you may be. And I say, I say again, brothers in this room, if any of you have family or concerns over there, please contact me directly. We can arrange direct support for you and your family inside the country from the British Embassy and Consulate in Pakistan, if you need it.

But I need to know about it. If I don't have the details—and we can do this sensitively, we can do this without publicizing it on social media or in the news. My job, first and foremost, is to help and protect those inside the country who need it. My second job is to speak up in favour of democracy.

Parliamentary Group Meeting

Just this afternoon, I had an online meeting with Imran Hussain, who is a long-standing champion of this cause and the chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, of which it is an honour for me to be a member and an active member. We are planning our activities for when Parliament resumes in the first week of September, looking at how we can continue to apply pressure on the Pakistani government, while also continuing to lobby and urge the British government to use all available diplomatic channels to deliver this message to the Pakistani High Commission in the UK and to the Pakistani government: that their treatment of Kashmiris and of British citizens in Kashmir, and their treatment of other fellow human beings in Kashmir, is unacceptable, and it is wrong, and it must change, and the abuse must stop.

This is non-negotiable. As a democrat and an advocate for human rights, it is a red line that the sanctity of human life and respect for others must be something that is honoured wherever people are in the world. And I will continue to speak out. Many of you know from the last meeting in this hall that I attended, that when those of us who are British MPs spoke out, the Pakistani government tried to intimidate us and said it was none of our business to speak out against human rights abuses in Kashmir.

Responsibilities of an MP

As an MP, I cannot think of a greater responsibility than doing the exact opposite of the Pakistani government's advice, which is to speak out every time human rights violations... For me, this is not about photo opportunities at an embassy. It is about getting the job done. And that work does not begin with social media posts.

It begins with meeting ministers, lobbying the government, and applying as much pressure as I can. Now, I am just one MP. I am the MP for one constituency, and I will do my absolute best. You know far better than I do that this conflict is at a terrible crossroads right now, but it has been going on longer than many of us in this room have been alive.

Kashmiri Community Unity

There is no quick fix and no easy answer to it. But the patience and resilience of you and this community, and what has inspired me in recent weeks, is the unity within the Kashmiri diaspora and community in the UK. The scale of the protests, the way the community is working together. Because if we want unity of purpose, we need unity within the community.

As a democrat and an advocate for human rights, it is a red line that the sanctity of human life and respect for others must be something that is honoured wherever people are in the world.

I will support this as a parliamentarian, and as a British parliamentarian, I will use my voice in Parliament to raise your concerns and your anxieties, and to offer a platform for peace, human rights, and ultimately, the implementation of UN resolutions and the right to self-determination. It is not for me as a British politician to tell the people of Kashmir how they should live their lives, but it is right for me to speak out and say that it must be the right of the Kashmiri people to decide how their country and homeland are governed.

Visiting the Fire Service

And without that right, there is no democracy. And without that choice, human rights are then denied. I have to go visit the fire service. I hope you will all understand, with this unusually hot weather for the UK, given the number of fires that have broken out recently.

It is really important for me to spend some time with the firefighters to thank them for their efforts in keeping my community and the many communities of others here safe. So I hope you will forgive me for not being able to stay longer. Councillor Ali and I have to leave shortly, but on very short notice, I was very eager to join this meeting early, to express my solidarity, and to reaffirm my commitment to speaking out for human rights and for the people of Azad Kashmir. Thank you. Thank you all once again very much. Now...
